Eyelid Surgery (Eye bag removal, Asian eyelid surgery, Blepharoplasty)
Eyelid surgery, also known as "Blepharoplasty" is a popular plastic surgery which corrects the sagging of upper eyelids and removes bags from below the eyes. The eyelid surgery dramatically changes the appearance of your eyes giving your face a youthful and fresh appearance.
The surgery can be done either of upper eyelids or lower eyelids alone or upper and lower eyelid surgery can be combined together. It is also common to get the eyelid surgery or blepharoplasty in combination with other facial plastic surgery procedures such as facelift, brow lift and rhinoplasty to give the face younger and fresher appearance.
Eye lid surgery is also done to correct the oriental eyes also known as asian eyelid surgery to make eyes look bigger.
It is advantageous for you to get the eyelid plastic surgery abroad in India as the cost of eyelid surgery or blepharoplasty in India is much less as compared to the cost of eyelid surgery in UK, USA, Australia, Canada, New Zealand or any other western country. You would stay at the hospital/ clinic for 1 night for Blepharoplasty which is part of the surgical cost. Another week in India is required before you can fly back to your country. Thus, a total of eight days are required for eyelid surgery overseas in India.
If you have puffy or droopy eyes or bags under your eyes, you can undergo eyelid surgery to correct that. Both men and women are candidates for blepharoplasty, typically above 35, but this may vary. You can also undergo blepharoplasty at a younger age to correct asian eyelids. The best candidates for eyelid surgery or blepharoplasty are those who are physically healthy, mentally and emotionally stable and understand the procedure, outcomes and risks very well.
Candidates with dry eyes, hypothyroidism, glaucoma or retinal problems, high blood pressure or other circulatory problems, cardiovascular disease or diabetes should inform their surgeon before they chose to undergo the surgery. The eyelid surgery in such cases has to be approached with caution.
Eye bag removal surgery, also known as blepharoplasty, is a straightforward procedure which usually takes between one to three hours to complete depending on whether upper eyelid or lower eyelid or both eyelids are being operated. The procedure is performed under local anaesthesia with sedation if done alone or general anaesthesia if done with other procedures such as facelift or brow lift.
The surgeon makes an incision within the natural crease of the eyelids which also extends slightly into the laugh lines. Through this excision, the surgeon removes the excess skin and the fatty tissue. The incision is then closed and when healed becomes completely invisible.
The surgeon makes the incision below the eyelashes which is well concealed. He then removes the excess skin, muscles and fat through the excision. If required, the muscles are also tightened to give a neat appearance. The incision is stitched and the scar becomes completely invisible in few weeks.
Recovery & Results
Expect a lot of swelling and bruising after the eyelid surgery, which will continue to increase for 48 hours after the surgery. The swelling shall begin to subside after 48 hours. Your cosmetic surgeon shall advise you to take rest with head elevated. You would also be advised to apply cold compresses to reduce swelling.
Recovery and healing varies from person to person and you may experience excessive watering of eyes or dry eyes, itching and even light sensitivity, which is normal and temporary. It shall settle within a week of the procedure. Your stitches would be removed on the seventh day and your surgeon would advise you to take rest for the first seven days. After which you can resume your normal activities but strenuous work should wait for about 3-4 weeks. Contact lenses to be worn after 6 weeks.
You would be advised to treat the area around the eyes with extra caution for few months which would include wearing sun blocks and darkly tinted glasses to protect the eye from heat and dust.
The final results of blepharoplasty would be visible after a few weeks, though you would be able to appreciate rejuvenation of the area as soon as your swelling begins to subside.
The results of eyelid surgery or blepharoplasty are long lasting. Your friends or relatives may tell you that you look fresh and relaxed, without realizing that you underwent an eyelid surgery.
